I'm Won Donguk, a transportation engineer in Seoul.
A quick intro about me and what I love to do
Where it all started
I began my career in 2004 studying how vehicles conflict at signalized intersections — using the Traffic Conflict Technique to predict accidents before they happen. That question, "how do we see risk before the crash?", has driven my entire career: from road design at construction firms to public transportation master plans for cities across Korea.
Taking road safety global
At the Korea Transport Institute I worked on international cooperation — green public transportation strategy for Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia with GGGI, and transportation ODA research for Eurasia. Later I joined the Hanoi Road Traffic Safety Master Plan in Vietnam and audited the Yangon–Mandalay expressway in Myanmar. Today I'm back in Ulaanbaatar, leading a KOICA program building safer school zones for children.
Falling in love with system dynamics
My Ph.D. at the University of Seoul changed how I see transportation: not as isolated problems, but as feedback systems. My doctoral work modeled traffic accident risk for chartered bus companies using system dynamics — and since then I've applied the methodology to everything from UAM passenger demand and parking policy to population forecasting and aviation safety. I've co-authored three books on the subject and teach it at universities and research institutes across Korea.
These days
I lead the Transportation Division at HD Inc. as Executive Director, advising government agencies on traffic impact assessments, safety diagnostics, and technology evaluation. I serve on advisory committees for Korea National Railway, the Korea Expressway Corporation, and cities across the capital region.
When I'm not working, you'll find me writing, teaching system dynamics, or planning the next chapter of safer streets — in Korea and beyond.
